Oh Yes... Rockaway Taco

Remember the time you were in San Diego and you had those pescado tacos you've been dreaming about since you left the West coast? Well... These are not them. Sorry... I'd like to consider myself a purist, and if I think they're better than what I ate in California, you probably should too. It's like the argument of Shake Shack vs. In & Out. They're both great at what they do, and whenever I'm eating either one, I swear it's the best fast-food burger I've ever had... It's the same way you'll feel about everything Rockaway Taco serves up.

Everything is super-fresh, the batter is perfect every time (never soggy), and the setting couldn't be any more fitting (you're about 2 blocks from a sandy beach).

Start with the cucumber + mango + chili salad for $2.00
It's fresh, different, and something intriguing to grub on while you wait for your tacos.

Don't think twice about the extra $1 for the Guac on the Fish tacos, do it... They may be $4 each, but what you get in return is so pretty and delicious, you won't care.

Finish off with the Plantain + Black Bean + Cheese Quesadilla. Disregard what it sounds like... It's sweet and delicious, perfect for finishing off a meal there.

I've also had their fresh juices. If you're like me and you ride there on bike, the watermelon juice might be the greatest thing you've ever tasted. It's not fortified with anything, just puree'd watermelon in a cup, and it's my favorite thing for any beach-related shenanigans after tacos.

Tacos El Bronco: Gringo-free tacos for L.A. refugees

Rarely to I stray too far from Tacos Matamoros when I'm in Sunset Park, but when I saw people laying down towels and camping on the concrete sidewalk with their families to enjoy tacos out of a truck, I had to stop and try this for myself. At first glance, everything seemed a bit too good to be true... $1.50 per taco, an actual roasting spit for al pastor goodness, and not a single person speaks English, I thought I had died and woken up in Southern California.

If you don't speak Spanish, just write this down on a piece of paper and hand it to the man taking orders... "Dos tacos al pastor, un taco de bistec, y un taco de chorizo por favor." By doing so, you'll successfully be awarded with a delicious assortment of tacos in return for $6.00. Make sure they give you some of their roasted onion bulbs on the side, those things are bombtastic.

The truck comes out at 7:00pm and stays out there pretty much all night until they run out of food. Be prepared to to wait for 20-30 min on your average night as they allow people to call in orders and I believe they even have a delivery system in place.

Red, White, Blue and Pink?

Pepto-Bismol is sponsoring the infamous 4th of July Hot Dog eating contest, held in Coney Island Brooklyn. Makes a lot of sense since those dudes/dudettes are going to be downing about 30-55 hot dogs just in one sitting. "It will be the first stomach remedy product associated with the event. By attaching its name to the ultimate in overdoing it, Pepto, which is owned by Procter & Gamble, may have found a receptive audience. "[Competitive] eaters have been using it for years," said George Shea, chairman of Major League Eating, the event organizer." WSJ

Thanh Da numero uno

After moving from Chinatown NYC to Prospect Heights Brooklyn, I was in for a shock! I guess I was living in a bubble of foodie paradise that I took for granted. I love it in Brooklyn but no longer are those late night $1 fried dumplings, $5 bowl of rice noodles and smell of rotting fish in the summer time. Oh wait, it’s coming back to me, the horrid smells - that’s why I moved.

Settled into my new hood and had to make new arrangements, like frequent stops to Sunset Park. While it’s very reminiscent of NYC Chinatown without the crooked corners and narrow alleyways, it was missing something. Thanh Da II on 5624B 57th st @ 8th ave, was just that little hidden gem that I was looking for. When I stumbled in I felt bit like my old self. This tiny shop has mostly Vietnamese sandwiches, and ice coffee that are just as good as the ones in NYC, dare I say even better. When I talked with the owner and found out Thanh Da numbero uno was on 7th Ave I had to check it out.

Tacky Asian grocery store as described by one of the numerous web reviewer is right on, it seems like they left their Christmas lights hanging from 1999 with tinsel and all. But that’s beside the point, all you have to know is that the food is DAMM good. Bun Bo Hue (Hue’s style Beef Noodle Soup) is a crazy good concoction of crab chili paste, loaded with basil and garlic. On the menu it reads beef but when you order it brave yourself for some pig knuckles along with some beef. If that doesn’t wet your appetite, Bun Rieu is a seafood fare that will get your attention cooked in Crab paste, tomato and vermicelli; this noodle soup will cure whatever ails you. But if you're like me I recommend the Bun Cha Cio spring roll with lettuce on a bed of vermicelli (dry), comes with a dipping sauce to go with, perfect on a hot night.

Best Thai Food

One of the best experiences eating out that I have ever had. The atmosphere is cozy and trendy, and they play great music. However, if you were to assume it would be infested with hipsters, you would be dead wrong. The wait staff was incredibly friendly, and the food came promptly. Fairly standard Thai fare, that includes Curry, Pad Thai, and an assortment of appetizers and soups are found on the minimalist menus. I highly recommend checking this place out, especially for lunch.

If Chef Boyardee and DiFara made it

You would get a great little place called Ozone Pizzeria, I was sent out to Richmond Hills for work and decided to googled a place to eat for lunch. Luckily our trust worthy Eatingintranslation.com blogger already eat his way through Ozone Park. I wanted the Lasagna slice, but they were out by the time I got there, so I went for the next best thing – anything hot coming out of the oven!
A Margaretta slice was only $2.50, the crust was simple crispy airy bottom with, supple pillow like bread dough consistency on the inside topping it off with canned sauce that tasted just like my childhood. Yup the Chef himself Boyardee, no kidding, it tasted just like that but gourmet. Who would have thought, but it works, to check out the pizzeria go to there site for more info and seriously where the hell is Ozone Park?

hearty italian soup

This healthy and hearty soup will keep your wallet skinny as well as your ass, trust me you’ll be eating this for days and not get sick of it. Here are the instructions.

In a large stockpot drizzle some olive oil and heat pot to medium – high, while that is heating cut up the 3 sausages into 1”x1” rings, and place in the heated pot. Once the sausages are brown add the onions and garlic and stir till the onions soften. Dump the rest of the ingredients into pot and add hot water. When the soup comes to a boil, cover and turn down the heat to low or a slow simmer.

This soup is great with noodles, rice or crackers and is better the day after.
