Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest
Description:
"The Nathan's International July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest is an annual competitive eating competition held at Nathan's Famous Corporation's original and best-known restaurant at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. The event is held on July 4, and is regarded as the world's most famous hot dog eating contest and a colorful tradition of Independence Day in the United States. In 2006, over 30,000 spectators attended the event, and an additional 1.5 million households watched it live on ESPN.[1]
The 92nd annual contest was held on July 4, 2007 and was televised live on ESPN at 12 p.m. EDT. Six-time defending champion Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi was beaten by Joey Chestnut, who won by eating a world record-breaking 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes.
The 2008 event is scheduled for July 4, 2008." From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Founded in 1983 by Coney Island USA, the not-for-profit arts organization that also produces the Coney island Circus Sideshow, the Mermaid Parade pays homage to Coney Island's forgotten Mardi Gras which lasted from 1903 to 1954, and draws from a host of other sources resulting in a wonderful and wacky event that is unique to Coney Island...." We like games which make people interact in new ways. We like games that alter your perception of your surroundings. But most importantly, we think games are great way to have fun.

RALLY & Surprise Party: Keep Union Square Public
Description:
Thursday, June 5th, 5pm at Union Square (North Side)
Intro
Pond is teaming up with a fantastic people who are coordinating a campaign to stop the privatization of New York City's beloved Union Square. The plan in the works favors a swanky celebrity-chef chardonnay restaurant and four lanes of traffic over, well, everything good about Union Square. lease come out this Thursday, June 5th at 5pm for a rally and SURPRISE PARTY at the north side of Union Square.
Who's involved? What will be at the rally?
YOU + denizens, marching bands, hoola hoopers, soapbox preachers, park lovers, greenmarket farmers, sun tanners, art vendors, a wingnut or two, ghosts of Union Square past, Reverend Billy & The Church of Stop Shopping.
How to Show Your Support & Get Involved
1) Come to the Rally & Surprise Party
2) Learn about what's going on in Union Square (which is emblematic of the privatization of public space happening in many places around the world) and creative strategies to alter that course: http://www.saveunionsquare2008.blogspot.com
3) Sign this petition: http://www.revbilly.com/petition
Context
After letting the pavilion building fall into disrepair for over a decade, the city government was finally ready to pony up the cash to repair the building and return it to public use. Before the city could even complete their own plans, the Union Square Business Improvement District, or BID, (led by corporate chain stores such as Barnes and Noble and Whole Foods) got involved, dangling wads of extra (anonymously donated) cash, and before you know it the plans that emerged took on a decidedly unfriendly tone, particularly if you happen to be an artist selling your work, a farmer selling food, or any citizen who might want to spend time in the park without spending money.
The Union Square Partnership, led by celebrity chef Danny Meyer, plans to turn the pavilion on the north side of this park into an upscale restaurant. They are pushing around the Greenmarket and the artist vendors, cutting down 80 year old trees, ending the day-care resources, driving out local residents and making it harder and harder for us, regular new Yorkers, parents, students, residents, visitors, to enjoy our own park. This park is being privatized. It is part of a city-wide pattern. The city underfunds the park, pushes aside public funds and then brings in a BID and a few millionaire friends posing as saviors. We don't need saving. We need transparency, a real democracy, and a public park.
We want to know who donated 5 million dollars to "buy" the pavilion and who will profit from the planned restaurant. We want to know why 17th street needs to be four lanes instead of two, and why the Farmers Market, artist vendors and park lovers were sold out for a fancy Chardonnay restaurant.
Union Square is a national Free Speech landmark, the pavilion was built as a stage for public assembly and democratic gathering. This is where our American conscience erupted in the songs of Paul Robeson, the shouts of Emma Goldman and the prayers of Dorothy Day. The 8-hour workday was born at Union Square and crowds surged before that reviewing stand in the tens of thousands. The first Labor Day Parade took place here in 1882 and after 9/11 we gathered here instinctively just like George Washington and the Continental Army did in 1776.
Help keep the park public - show up to the rally on Thursday June 5th at 5pm in the north side of Union Square. The Union Square Partnership (the group behind the swanky restaurant scheme) is holding their annual dinner just a block or two from the park that night. A fitting occasion to invoke the history of Union Square by speaking out for its future!

2008 Ninth Ave. International Food Festival
Description:
May 17-18 : : : 9:30 am - 6:30 pm
9th Avenue from 37th Street to 57th Street
The Ninth Avenue International Food Festival in May has become a favorite weekend for New Yorkers since it began in 1973. From 37th Street to 57th Street, Ninth Avenue closes to cars and the festival takes over. More than a million people visit the festival each year. It's unique and amazing, celebrating the joys of ethnicity through food, entertainment and every kind of street fair stall.
Most street fairs in New York all look the same but this one stands out. The food is the big draw, but the festival is a fabulous expression of the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood – teeming with ethnic food shops and fine restaurants and offering an eclectic global smorgasbord of national and regional foods. Outside venders participate as well, but the Ninth Avenue merchants and restaurants and the community organizations of Hell's Kitchen are out in all their neighborhood glory.
Come for Argentinian, Brazilian, Cajun, Chinese, Cuban, Dominican, Ethiopian, French, German, Greek, Haitian, Indian, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, Moroccan, Pakistani, Polish, Puerto Rican, Peruvian, Senegalese, Sicilian, Southern, Spanish, Thai, Trinidadian, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese food – and more!
Working up from the south end of Ninth Avenue, you will be enticed by:
* chorizo sandwiches - from Esposito Pork Shop, at 38th
* the best sausage and pepper hero ever - from Giovanni Esposito & Sons at 38th
* clams and oysters on the half shell at the seafood stands (Central Fish and Sea Breeze) around 38th Street

* french pastries
* fried elephant ears
* full pigs rotating on spickets over an open fire

Even at the Ninth Avenue Food Festival, there are the standards – mozzarepas, zeppolis, funnel cakes, and egg creams – but this is one street fair where they are outnumbered by fabulous foods that you actually don't see at other fairs.
Around the middle area of the festival, stages are set up for live music and dancing. You will see Egyptian belly dancing, German folk dancing, and Arabian scarf dancing, Midori & Chad performing Lindy Hop, Charleston, Peabody, Blues and Salsa routines, the New York Celtic Dancers sharing the traditional dances and music of Scotland – plus other performers and many local bands.
There are also plenty of regular street fair vendors selling inexpensive clothes, sunglasses, accessories and socks. If you like jewelry, there are always rings, bracelets, earrings, and pendants available. You'll also find the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market vendors selling their various wares down 39th Street.
Bring a big appetite, wear comfortable shoes and loose-fitting clothes. If you need to offset your gluttony-guilt, remember: the Ninth Avenue Food Festival is held to raise money for the community groups in Hell's Kitchen.
The festival takes place each year the weekend after Mother's Day. There is no admission fee and the festival extends from 37th street to 57th street. It starts at 9:30 am and ends at 6:30 pm. You can miss most of New York's street fairs but you can't miss this one.
