After moving from Chinatown NYC to Prospect Heights Brooklyn, I was in for a shock! I guess I was living in a bubble of foodie paradise that I took for granted. I love it in Brooklyn but no longer are those late night $1 fried dumplings, $5 bowl of rice noodles and smell of rotting fish in the summer time. Oh wait, it’s coming back to me, the horrid smells - that’s why I moved.
Settled into my new hood and had to make new arrangements, like frequent stops to Sunset Park. While it’s very reminiscent of NYC Chinatown without the crooked corners and narrow alleyways, it was missing something. Thanh Da II on 5624B 57th st @ 8th ave, was just that little hidden gem that I was looking for. When I stumbled in I felt bit like my old self. This tiny shop has mostly Vietnamese sandwiches, and ice coffee that are just as good as the ones in NYC, dare I say even better. When I talked with the owner and found out Thanh Da numbero uno was on 7th Ave I had to check it out.
Tacky Asian grocery store as described by one of the numerous web reviewer is right on, it seems like they left their Christmas lights hanging from 1999 with tinsel and all. But that’s beside the point, all you have to know is that the food is DAMM good. Bun Bo Hue (Hue’s style Beef Noodle Soup) is a crazy good concoction of crab chili paste, loaded with basil and garlic. On the menu it reads beef but when you order it brave yourself for some pig knuckles along with some beef. If that doesn’t wet your appetite, Bun Rieu is a seafood fare that will get your attention cooked in Crab paste, tomato and vermicelli; this noodle soup will cure whatever ails you. But if you're like me I recommend the Bun Cha Cio spring roll with lettuce on a bed of vermicelli (dry), comes with a dipping sauce to go with, perfect on a hot night.
