De Hot Pot Caribbean Cuisine and Roti Shop
1127 Washington Ave, Brooklyn ny 11225
Only the 7th day into the New Year and already in my head I’m thinking, “Dam – De Hot Pot is the best of 2010”! I thinks its gonna be a great year with crazy roti hot pot spots (try to say that 3 times) and new hood discoveries.
De Hot Pot actually doesn’t have any hot pot, while sadden by the news I still persisted and looked onwards to my great feast. Asked one of the regulars what she was having, she replied, “that there is the Doubles”. Doubles? I was confused because I’ve never heard of that, but it sounded good, especially if it’s multiplied in 2. As it turns out “Doubles” is a popular and cheap East Indian fast food sandwiching curried chickpeas in 2 batter patties along with hot sauce, pickled mangos and tamarind sauce. One of those bad boys is $1.25 – CraZY cheap. Not to mention one of the best things I’ve eaten in a long time. I also tried the fish with pickled peppers and onions also amazing, and a Caribbean tamale call Pame wrapped in banana leaves. Not only are the staff friendly but they are also very educational, the owner told me what was in every dish I ordered and told me about a tree bark drink Mauby that is great for the skin.

Just take a look at the 60 year old woman above, she is testament to all that great Non-hot-pot Caribbean East Indian food.
