Don’t let the run-of-the-mill New York deli façade tricks you, Terry's Gourmet offers some authentic Trinidadian dishes so surprising delicious that for sure will blow your mind away.
Catering mostly towards the lunchtime take-away crowd, Terry's Gourmet has all the typical items- an average salad bar, list of boring sandwiches, health-conscious rolls and breakfast specials.
Bypass this all, go straight to the counter and order a Roti- a 7 inches diameter stuffed ball of scrumptiousness made with Trinidadian flatbread “Dhal Puri” (introduced to the islands by indentured Indian workers). Inside the ball is curry aloo (potatoes), chick peas and your choice of stuffing- curry chicken, curry goat, beef stew or shrimp. I got the Roti with Curry Chicken ($6.45 Tax Included) and I can barely finish it. One downside is they don’t use boneless meat so be careful with the chicken bones and goat bones.
Besides the Trinidadian specialties Terry’s also have Jerk Chicken with Red Beans and Rice ($6.45 Tax Included). Despite the lack of spiciness and charrness, the Jerk Chicken is very tender and juicy. The red beans and rice is delicious and is perfect complements with other dishes such as Beef Stew and curry goat.
With the normal lunch price average around ten to twelve bucks in the Chelsea/ Flatiron area, Terry's Gourmet is definitely a rare find in terms of the quantity and quality.
