Buffet in New York doesn’t work so well, the limited amount of real estate, to the lack of enthusiasm that New Yorkers have for glut can leave a cheapass/overeater a bit sad. Tiffin Wallah is no different than most Indian lunch buffet and for $6 is well worth the trip, but I can’t help wonder, is that all there is? The lunch buffet has all the traditional fare, including the variety of sauces down to the pickled mangos, 2 different assortments of rice, Chapati (whole-wheat flat breads) and 3 different types of vegetarian curries/stews. All very well spiced and delectable but I can’t help wonder if I’m just filling up on sauces. There is no time limit at Tiffin Wallah but the crowds during lunch gets crazy and the lines can be long, so one is given restricted time to pick and chose, and almost every time I go up I spend at least half of my time pondering what sauces will accommodate my breads and curries. And just like the person ahead me it is inevitable that I have to pour all the sauces on to my plate.
Once I move 3 feet away from the sauce bar, I am given 3 different curries which all have legumes in them, tasting more or less the same once on my plate, so I ask again, is that all there is? Yes for $6 what more could you ask for, Tiffin Wallah offers good table service, ambiance and great food, but once in awhile a spinach panner could make a rotation. Then again, for $6 now a day won’t buy me a happy meal at Mc Donald’s.
