All you hot mamacitas and papacitos have to check out El Maguey y La Tuna located in the Lower East Side, the rare find w/out gimmicks. El Maguey y La Tuna is a gem that is a hidden hush-hush that most have yet to discover, not your typical fast eatery or a all in one packages (where one can find a Cubano, taco and pizza) – no this is as authentic as it gets. The outer decor is modest as well as the inside, with couple of handcrafted Mexican textiles.
Feeling festive, we went all out not like our cheapass selves, so we ordered, appetizers the Cinco De Mayo Deluxe ($14.95), Mole Pipian (pumpkin mole $14.95), fish tacos ($12.95), jalapeno margarita ($8) and Negra Modelo ($5). But before we even ordered the wait staff brought a small blow of chips and salsa to hold us over till our entrees arrived, score!!! At most places nowadays one would have to order a side of chips and salsa, but I digress.
The deluxe apps came with fried taquitos filled with beans, stuffed jalapenos, guacamole, quesadilla (vegetarian) and fresh pico de gallo. I loved it all but the stuffed jalapenos were the best I had, soft Mexican cheese with a whole jumbo shrimp all inside of a hot pepper- out of this world. Second on the deluxe would have to be the creamy freshly made guacamole. When I was ready to pass out by the time we finished our appetizers but then our plates of deliciousness arrived, that’s when I knew I had to suck it up and eat on for all you good people and for my hombres.
Fish tacos which are very popular in San Diego and Los Angles had no competition with us East Coasters, no these fish tacos kicked ass. The filet of white fish battered (lightly) retaining the moister of the flaky fish while the outer crust was crisp in every bite.
The mole was especially made for the celebration of Cinco De Mayo, homemade pumpkin seeds based sauce and simmered with chicken. A subtle dish with hints of cumin and nutty finish, but not to be overlooked by any means. The last time we dinned at El Maguey y La Tuna I remember all the moles quite exceptional.
Speaking of special the jalapeno margarita is a treat; the heat of the pepper really kicks in after the first sip however for $8 a drink I thought not so special. But then again we were feeling jovial after our first drink.
