What do you get with one counter, with a few stools, and a freight elevator? Give up, El Sabroso is exactly that- a counter, inside a hallway, leading to the freight elevator of a building. This may sound daunting to some of you but for those who are a bit on the crazy/cheapass side El Sabroso will not disappoint. When I first stepped into his hallway/café I thought of some underground shit was going on, but once I met the owner and chef, I couldn’t wait to eat.
Usually El Sabroso closes around 4:30pm but he was nice enough to dish me up some of his famous beef stew over rice and beans for $6. While I waited for my food to heat up I chatted it up with the owner and found out that he has been running the eatery for over 15 years and previous to that he was in Flushing. The menu is mostly Latin fare with your standard, pork chops, stewed and baked chicken, rice & beans, and beef stew, but on Fridays they serve a few Peruvian specials. Unfortunately it was a Monday (sad), however I was lucky to taste the beef stew before closing, the stew was nicely seasoned while the beans were like velvet, especially great with the homemade hot sauce.
If your looking for some change in your lunching and little bit of adventure check out El Sabroso for some great eats and out of the ordinary environment.
