Some people complains about the Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown Manhattan are run by Chinese not Vietnamese, which they think affects the authenticity of the food. If that’s what your concern is, try Nam Son. This place is my Vietnamese friend Huan’s favorite home cooking hang out and the menu is as authentic as it can get.
For the Pho, a Xe Lua (Combination Extra Big Bowl) cost you around $6, the broth is clear and fragrant. To prove this is authentic Vietnamese, one should get the “Nuoc Beo”- a small bowl of clear rendered beef oil with scallion and put it into your broth to beef up the flavor. YUM! Not only the beef oil greatly enhances the taste of the broth, it is also a great hungover remedy- to form a thin oil in your stomach.
The Cha Gio (4 rolls for $3.50) are as good as most places, the Goi Cuon Summer Roll ($3.50) is great too. They also have a vast selection of more “upscale” dishes ranged from $8-12. The Bo La Lot- grilled ground beef wrapped in grape leaves served w/ rice paper, green leaves, mint leaves, pickles & rice vermicelli and the Banh Hoi Chao Tom- barbecued shrimp roll on sugar cane served w, veg & angle hair noodle are both our favorite.

Get the Nuoc Beo
The seafood noodle soup is pretty good, not the greatest.
